DNS Issues

There have been massive attacks lately on the global DNS system. This comes after known flaws were announced last week. Many DNS servers have already been patched but not all admins have been vigilant and there are many troubled servers out there.

What is DNS? DNS stands for Domain Name System. When you type in the name of a website into a browser the DNS is what translates that to the IP address where the site is located. Having a flaw in that system prevents your browser from connecting to a website. You’ll get a blank window telling you the site or server cannot be found. Who is affected by this is random. It all depends on where you are and what settings your ISP is using that dictates what DNS server you are using.

There are several work-arounds currently discussed. The main one is to go into your internet settings and change your DNS from automatic to one of your choosing. The process is described here:

After doing that there still may be adelay before you can see results. You may want to also flush your DNS. You can do so by going into your command prompt (typing “cmd” into your Windows search bar), and then typing into that window ipconfig/flushdns. That should force your computer to adopt any changes you just made to the DNS.

Otherwise, if you do not want to be hands on, you will have to wait until your connection is patched. There is no timeframe for that as it could be a short or long wait until that server is fixed.
